If it saves you from taking the boat out annually then that $900 is well worth it.

Re: Ultrasonic antifouling

Not to hijack the thread but my favorite anti fouling is no anti fouling dry sailed boats. And than I think no anti fouling “iRobot” device that scrubs bottom automatically. No paint, no harm to sensitive creatures and a fast boat.

Re: Ultrasonic antifouling

I know several people who have installed Sonihull systems and feel they helped - but it's not magic. You still need good antifouling paint and you still need to dive occasionally to clean it in high growth areas. They report that it goes about twice as long between cleanings as with just antifouling paint.

It seems to help most on saildrives.

Not particularly practical with the 36-foot keelboat that the OP owns.

Re: Ultrasonic antifouling

I kind of see it working on barnacles but weed, sea squirts or the brown slime that covers anything that doesn't move regularly?

How about you try an install for a year on behalf of the forum?

Re: Ultrasonic antifouling

I've noticed that whenever someone shells out big bucks for a product of uncertain effectiveness, they tend to become staunch believers. Another reason anecdotal evidence and buyer testimonials carry very little weight with me.

Results from unbiased testing by someone who doesn't have a vested interest would go a long way toward quelling skepticism. The fact that we don't seem to have those results speaks volumes.

Go for it, for the benefit of the team.

As they said in Red October, "You will receive the order of Lenin for this"

What are the main problems you have each year living in the birthplace of civilisation?

Barnacles, weed, scum, soft corals?

Re: Ultrasonic antifouling

I have lost track of how many threads of this I have read here. They always go the same way and in the end we learn nothing. You would think that posters interested in this system from threads 10 years ago could be posting results.

Given the time I’m on CF I will most certainly post results. However I find crustaceans not renowned for answering my emails or writing opinion pieces. So it will take considerable time to report

Absolutely we’ve learned something. We’ve learned that although these systems have been around for years and years and have been discussed ad nauseam here, there is still very little (if any) evidence that they perform as advertised. We’ve learned that they are snake oil (and harmful snake oil at that) being marketed to those trying to save a buck on boat maintenance. The very fact that there aren’t a whole bunch of users in here raving about how well ultrasonic anti fouling systems work tells all we need to know about them.
