Re: varnish issues on exterior teak

For the past forty (40) years I just go sailing and let the salt spray take care of my teak. Once and a while depending on conditions, my teak and I need a bath, so I do both with soap, lite scrubbing and a rinse on the teak with salty water. Ok, my teak and beard are matching silver. Sadly I know my silver teak will outlast me. However, I sure got in a lot of sailing...

Re: varnish issues on exterior teak

[QUOTE=onestepcsy37;1229956]clean the bare teak with the don casey system; a bucket of water with a half cup bleach, half cup liquid laundry detergent, soft scrub brush. don't scrub too hard or in the same direction as the grain of the wood. let it soak in, then hose it off. let it dry (maybe come back tomorrow).

onestepcsy37 - did i read this correctly that you do not scrub in the direction of the grain - so you scrub across the grain -- or did i miss something

thanks

Re: varnish issues on exterior teak

chuckr -

yes, it's true. if you use a brush and scrub in the direction of the grain it will quickly wear grooves in the teak. we did it wrong the first time we cleaned the teak, when it was very dirty, and now have grooved teak caprails. fortunately, the starbrite tropical teak oil fills in the grooves so it still looks pretty good until the starbrite wears off.
