Varnish, poly, laquer, oil....

Is there a simple way to tell what the finish is on the cabin sole? Given the age (1988) can I assume varnish?

At this age, it doesn't matter--if you sand whatever's there you can coat it with anything.

I have seen some exotic coatings .. maybe a mixture of varnish and epoxy. not sure. I would assume oil based varnish and use the same after sanding. Be careful with the teak veneer which is probably what you have.
