Re: Wagner helm pump bleeding ???

There are NO bleeding screws on the RAM. N-type RAM ??? RAM is assumed to be N-175-750/1000. Seal Kit installed is Wagner 119-0017 ....... that is what is printed not the package the repair fellow left on the boat - along with parts he replaced.
RAM was installed by Wagner Engineering on Paul Wagner's WindLass in ~1972/1973.

Re: Wagner helm pump bleeding ???

Looking back in the thread I see you did mention you have a Wagner N-175-750/1000 hydraulic cylinder. Looking at the blow apart diagram and see that these are the old style rams that had no bleeders. They were replaced by the new N series cylinders that have bleeders.

To tell you the truth I've never seen one of these in real life. So w/o the bleeders I would follow the similar directions as in the Gord's attachment, but instead of opening the bleeders, you'd need to open/loosen the appropriate hose to bleed it and get a solid stream of fluid. You probably need at least 2 people to do the job. Hopefully that works.

Look for a place in Vancouver called Summer Equipment LTD https://www.macraesbluebook.com/sear...m?company=1856
They carried Wagner parts and had some interesting comments on your "obsolete" cylinder. Maybe they know a good way to bleed your system.

Re: Wagner helm pump bleeding ???

Wow, no bleeders. Might explain why it looks like someone drilled and tapped two 1/4-20 holes into my ram and stuffed cut off bolts into them. Even then they're a PITA to bleed out, and yes two people is a must. I don't know what access you have, I can't even reach mine, I have to send the admiral down since she's the only one small and strong enough to fit.

I swear a weight lifting midget could make ten times their weight in gold as a marine mechanic.

Also, yes I had the same behavior that it would lock to one side and slip to the other. In my case I could flip the selector valve in the engine room and it would flip which side was squishy. The other advantage is if you have quick disconnects where the autopilot plugs into the system, push the pin in the connector to get air out of the middle of the line.

Side note, that hydraulic fluid will float on the water in your bilge forever. I think I still have a half gallon to clean up.

Re: Wagner helm pump bleeding ???

Yes. Wagner Engineering installed the RAM. No bleeding ports on the RAM. Hope someone has instruction on how to bleed a RAM with no bleeding ports.
RAM is: N-175-175-750/1000 Seal kit used was Wagner 119-0017

Suggest you put a pan under cylinder.
Crack the port pipe fitting as someone turns wheel to port all the way & hold wheel there.

Tighten the port fitting & have someone top up the helm oil.
Crack the Stbd fitting.
Turn wheel to stbd all the way & hold wheel there.
Tighten stbd fitting & top up helm oil.
Repeat til no more air bubbles.

I suspect you have dirt inside the rebuilt cylinder that is holding a check ball open,or in the square block valve on rear of helm-see diagrams that I posted previously. Cheers / Len

Re: Wagner helm pump bleeding ???

THANKS ........ Looking at the drawing of a RAM - the in/out hoses are located at the extreme end of the piston travel hmmmmmmmm
Cracking the hose connection on one end of the cylinder and turning the wheel should push anything in the cylinder (oil & AIR) out of that end of the cylinder. Tighten hose connection and do the same for the other travel of the RAM. Hmmm.

Re: Wagner helm pump bleeding ???

THANKS Dublin.
Looking much clearer.
Before redoing RAM seals I will ensure RAM is purged that way ... ie;
Turn wheel to full PORT
Loosen hose connection on STBD end of cylinder
Put pan under to catch oil
Turn wheel full STBD
Tighten loosened connection.
Do same for PORT travel of cylinder.

To post a pic or pics,I have to have the pics in a file in my puter.
Then I click on Post Reply at bottom of thread to start a new comment.
Then I click on the Paper Clip at top of new window.
This brings up a new window with a bunch of Browse buttons-no idea why so many.
Click on top Browse button.
A new window opens showing the files in your puter.
Open the file that contains your pic & click on pic.
Choose Save

Go back to Browse window & click Upload.
In a few secs, the pic is sitting hidden next to the Paper clip.
Click the Down arrow? & choose Insert All.
If you want to add more pics, repeat above.
Very cumbersome-must have been written by a DOS geek before Windows
I have never figured out how to work the URL message thingy. It appears if you are in the middle of someone elses thread,or some such random nonsense. If I want to add a link to a URL,I have to google it,left click on the url?,choose Copy,re-open CF & the thread,& Paste the link. Very cumbersome,& I'm sure there is a simpler way. Cheers/Len
