The paint manufacturers buy copper on futures, years in advance, stabilizing the price of anti fouling paint. I doubt they will price their customers out of the market.

The US nickle would be a good choice. 75% copper and 25% nickle (or something like that) so it doesn't corrode.

Saying banning copper bottom paint will stop strip mining is a very vacuous argument.

Hey more steel gets used in the USA to made bottle caps than to make cars. We start down this slippery slope type of thinking and we will have to give up beer! This is serious stuff!

Like all extremists, our environmental saviors will push their agenda beyond credibility, and their entire house of cards will collapse on land, sea and air. They have almost destroyed the world economy, isn't it about time to show them the door?

This is a classic example of an unsubstantiated opinion backed by a complete lack of reality. You're not running for office are you?

It's facts that worry me. No one seems to know for sure what they are in most debates.

Old news. Helmet or not is a personal decision. No different than having unprotected sex or smoking. Let those who ride decide.

This is major drift but!!! Think all motorcycle riders should sign an organ donor authorization if they don't ride with a helmet. Really a shame to waste all those good organs.

35,000 people die yearly in car accident, 2000 yearly in motorcycle accidents. I wonder which would provide better organ harvesting?

Should all boaters be required to sign a boat donor authorization if they don't always anchor with 10:1 scope?

No I'm not running for office. But after politely enduring your opinions for a couple years I'm dissapointed to find you unwilling to reciprocate.

Re: Washington State Copper Paint Law

You are something like a 100 times more likely to die riding a motorcycle than in a car based on number of vehicles registered. If you look at annual miles driven, the chances of getting killed on a motorcycly vice riding in a car are truly astronomical. Where auto deaths are dropping, motorcycle deaths are trending up. At least they were till the recession hit. No matter how you slice it, motorcycles are dangerous in a crash with the only thing between you and reality being a little bit of leather, yours or your clothing and a helmet. With a car, you've got 3,000 plus pounds of structural material bwteen you and the outside world. Add airbags and seatbelts and the safety factor increases tremendously in favor of the automobile.

I've owned motorcycles, regularly ride a bicycle and they just aren't as safe as a car. Often not the fault of the rider but just the reality. Won't deny anyone's right to ride a motorcycle, just don't want to have to pay to maintain you in a vegetative state or lose your organs if you have a major/fatal head injury that a helmet could have prevented. I'm forced to wear a seatbelt in my car, see no reason you shouldn't wear a helmet on your bike.

FWIW, have broken two helmets in bicycle crashes, one on and one off road but didn't suffer any trauma. My brother in law caught his tire in a crack and vaulted the handle bars. Destroyed his helmet and put him in the hospital with cranial bleeding. Without the helmet he very well might have died. As it was, he's got three days he can't account for.

What an extraordinary cynical comment. Mostly people who flag comments end up making fairly outlandish statements is due to our totally useless hype driven media, who are not interested in meaningfull news but want hype. So campaigners give it to them.

Surely we should seek to reduce pollutants where ever and whenever possible.
