Water, what to do

So after 20 years our water tank has decided to leak in a place that we cannot find, so pulling it out and putting in a new one. The question is to have another stainless steal one made up or to go with another material. A bit more information you ask, ok.

Right now it is 140 gallon SS tank. What I am thinking of doing is having a new tank made up but a bit shallower than the current one. That way I could use the top of it as a battery tray for about another 880 AH for the house bank. Some people that I have talked to have mentioned going with plastic instead of steal. What are peoples thoughts on this, the good and the bad the ugly? What are peoples thoughts on using the top of the water tank as a place to put batteries?
