Not an innovation, already in wide use for several years. Frequently seen on the custom ocean racers and custom long distance cruisers.

I think it is a great idea. (I'll put that on the "Things to do" list)

Re: Watertight companionway hatch

Does it stay open if you want it to? What keeps the open hatch from slamming shut and shattering? Do lines get caught in it? Fingers? Would a sheet wrapped around it wrench it off? Are there screens for bugs? While such a hatch may be less expensive than other options, watertight is not the only criterion for a companionway hatch.

Re: Watertight companionway hatch

Maybe a purpose built fiberglass hatch would be better option (with a small acrylic window to check on occupants of the cockpit) than a deck hatch.

There's a small eye welded next to the handle with a piece of string to tie off the open hatch lid to the frame.

I don't think it has many issues not shared by other hatches.

Others have made versions that are built raised over the bridge deck

Headroom in entering and exits would be my concern

Note this is a slightly different style, built over the bridgedeck
