Weights for mosquito netting

I am making a weighted mosquito curtain/cover for my cockpit.

What works well for the weights? Sand, lead weights, copper BB's, something else?

I just sewed some light chain into the edges of our mosquito net.

String weights work well. These are also good for replacing weighted lines for passerelles.

+1 on the chain. I'm not sure if you mean light as in "not heavy" or bead chain that is often used on overhead lights, but either is a good choice to sew into the hem at the bottom of your netting. I find the bead chain conforms to the surface better.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what bead chain is. I just used some cheap decorative brass stuff. It is light, but has enough weight to keep the screen in place. As you say, it conforms well to any surface.

Re: Weights for mosquito netting

When I made mine I used curtain weighted line that you can get at sewing shops or on line. It is a cloth tube, about a quarter of an inch thick, that has small weights in it. The weights are not attached to each other so that the line is flexible. Just cut it to length and sew it into a bottom hem. It is heavy enough to stay down but do not interfere with any people movement.

Re: Weights for mosquito netting

We used old rope, from genoa sheets and from dock lines. It is heavy enough. Same for hatch nets. If the netting is loose, it allows more air in, too. You don't have to strive for a tight fit. Also, while in the Solomons, we learned that you can soak the net in permethrins, and that will kill the mozzies, and flies, which I enjoyed at the time, not wanting malaria. But now, with awareness of bees' vulnerability to pesticides, maybe not such a good idea as it seemed at the time.
