Funny, I found Bote Cotes odour to be a quite strong solvent smell, where the other epoxies I've used (Several brands) are more or less odourless.

Re: West Systems equivalent to Bote Cote?

If the designer specifies a superior product that is actually cheaper, why would one even consider a substitute?

Consider substitutes only if the design recommended product has been subsequently found to be hazardous or has other problems. Bote Cote has not, as far as I am aware, disappointed its users, but to date I have not been one of them. Had I bought thoise plans I would certainly have become one though.

The instructions call for:
Quote:
The boat should be glued with a high solids epoxy system such as Bote Cote, or other
quality marine resin system.

The instructions don't say Bote Cote, specifically.

They say:

Re: West Systems equivalent to Bote Cote?

That recommendation is probably becasue Storer is Oz-based, as is Bote Cote.

I've used Bote-Cote and can confirm it doesn't 'amine blush' too badly, but does need to be sanded between coats.

I don't know if one can get an allergic reaction to the product directly, as I've tried to keep it off my skin, but I suffer from dermatitis so use gloves anyway to minimise ther eaction I get, which is as much from the hands sweating in the gloves as it is from touching the product.

I suffer from heat-sensitive and moisture-sensitive dermatitis brought on by years in my misspent youth behind bars *without* gloves.

I can't even have a long shower without getting itchy palms, and long exposure to saltwater without the ability to properly dry it off has a similar reaction.

It just happens faster with hot water or moisture and heat.

Can't go anywhere without a tube of cortisone cream.

But yeah, what someone else said - only use Bote Cote if you live in Oz. Good back up from manufacturer.

As to the 'aroma issue' it's more about the base of the resin system - polyester stinks, vinylester is not much better, and epoxy the least stinky.

Guess which one is cheaper, and why commercial yards use it..??
