What finish is this, need tier 1 options!

Hey guys, what’s the best way to spruce up the interior, I like the colors and finish on the wood, just want to clean it up, and probably replace all the screws with brass.

Basically touch up the paint and...stain?

And patch some old light holes in the ceiling

Thoughts?

Thanks!!

Hi, for interior's I like a good satin or subdued gloss varnish over a flat finish any time. IMHO gives a classy look.

So just scuff that up and go over it with, what would you recommend?

Also I’m not sure if that’s white paint or gelcoat

I do know that forward wall is a white veneer, not sure how to deal with that.

If you like the colors, why on earth would you want to use STAIN? Which is specifically designed to change the color of wood?

I agree, the wood looks in good shape, and beautiful Skip the stain.

I am not sure how hard you want to work, at one end is a full gloss varnish job. Something that takes a bit of skill to pull off well, but looks a million bucks.

On the other end, is just a good furniture paste wax. You'll need to redo it once in a while, but it will be pretty. You can try it in an corner and see if it floats your boat... so to speak...

If the white needs any repairs or mods then you will have to repaint it, as you said, a light scuff and repaint with a white similar to the veneer on the forward bulkhead (saves having to repaint it) and the timber that appears to be fairly good just give it a light scuff with a scotchbrite pad and refinish. Bills advice re the furniture wax is good as well.

Would painting the veneer be bad?

My gut says tear it down and re apply

If you just don't like the colour or finish then repaint is the way to go, if it is damaged then repair or replace is best. Personally I would make a good as I reasonably could and go sailing.

It very had to tell from a picture, but your wood might just be oiled......if so, a yearly rub with lemon oil is all you need. Check by lightly sanding a small hidden spot. Varnish will come off as a powder, as it’s a dried finish, whereas oiled will remain oily, and you’ll get a little oily sawdust.

Hi, NorthernMac,

I'm agreeing will billkny, about the white, sand and paint, trying to match the white.

As to the timber, if you want it slightly glossy, then varnish with a semi gloss; and if you want is really highly shiny, go with a gloss. Usually, a semi gloss is better for older timber that has minor dings in it, the high gloss shows all defects.

Ann

on edit: The "wall" is the forward bulkhead, and may have been painted to make the saloon lighter. Me, I prefer the timber bright, but it is a matter of choice.

Nice looking merle tukus on the settee, give a pat from us.

Interlux Goldpsar is what I used on my interior. Pretty forgiving and lays down nicely vs spar varnish. It's designed for interior woodwork. I'd def use it again. Has a nice satin feel.

As with any finishing project, prep is 90% of the work. Sanding, taping, wiping down

Re: What finish is this, need tier 1 options!

I’ve been working on the interior of my ‘free’ Freedom ketch for awhile. I ended up sanding and patching some of the interior veneer and then painting it with White Rust-Oleum Mariner paint. I’ve been blown away by the finish.
Also very happy with The wood trim. For that I’ve used Howard Restor-A-Finish in a close-matching color applied with 0000 steel wool. Wipe after 30 min, air out overnight, and then apply Howard Feed-N-Wax. Nice, soft glow to the trim. Obviously, if you have varnished or otherwise sealed trim, this may not work. Lots of videos on the Restor-A-Finish online.

Good luck!

Re: What finish is this, need tier 1 options!

As far as the white. You need to know what the material is first. Wood and gel oat are two different animals. Also some times Formica has been used - also treated differently.
Next unless you had cans of the exact paint originally used trying and form of “patch” painting is a definite no go.
At the least you would have to repaint a whole panel if you get a very good match so two side by side panels don’t look different.
Remember these boats are often spray painted before the trim is installed and you can do a good job but even with care it will not be as great when repainted unless all trim is removed and replaced. Finish work widely varies. To just scuff it up and put on a coat of paint - little cost. to do it top notch time and materials is very costly. You need to decide your level of perfection wanted at the end.

Wipe the wood down with Linseed Oil, i just did my interior and it has made an amazing difference. This is recommended by Hallberg Rassy for their boat interiors. I used a small spray bottle and a paper towel and it was very easy to do.
