What kind of fabric is this?

These pics are of the fabric on my existing dodger. The white side is facing out and is smooth. The underside is grey and has a definite fabric feel to it. The fabric is fairly thick. I would like to use the same type material, but I'm not finding it anywhere. Can anyone identify this fabric and give me ideas on where I can locate some?

I've checked the Sailrite site - even ordered a few samples - but nothing was close to what I have. I've also looked at vinyl fabrics, but not finding it there either

I think it is from Sunbrella… maybe called Sunbrella Plus? It has vinyl on one side.

Re: What kind of fabric is this?

Here in Oz, it is called "marine hooding", used for dodgers, and sometimes biminis. It is quite long lived, and it is a fabric that is PVC on one side, and the fabric on the inside is prone to mildew and green stuff, which I think is an alga. Bleach or Napisan will kill the green stuff, and there is benzalkonium (sp?) chloride you can buy for outdoor furniture which will deal with the mildew.

Hmmm… Sunbrella Plus has the smooth vinyl on the inside and fabric outside.

If you can source it and it falls within the budget, I think Sunbrella Plus is the top product.

Re: What kind of fabric is this?

It's likely some type of "topping vinyl", usually used for automotive convertible tops. Lots of it gets used for reinforcing of marine covers. It usually has a cotton or denim backing, well soaked with preservatives. It's a bit stretchy/shrinky, so it tends to conform well to the odd shapes found at the edges of boat canvas.

I use LOTS of it, but I buy it pre-cut & don't know the trade name of the fabric.

Re: What kind of fabric is this?

Seamark may be what you have [fabric on one side; vinyl on the other] and is common for dodger/ bimini tops.

Stamoid is a similar vinyl infused Fabric, but has no fabric side like Seamark.

In case this is helpful.

Cheers, Bill

Re: What kind of fabric is this?

The marine hooding is more open to bias stretching than the heavy weight Stamoid. Stamoid, though, fulfills its 10 yr. guarantee. One does have to be very careful working with it, though, to cut the shapes properly, because it ain't going to stretch at all. Whereas, the marine hooding with which I am familiar actually shrinks over time, as the plasticizers evaporate. It was recommended by the maker of the dodger that we use convertible top dressing on it, which we did for the first 3 yrs. or so. It is now becoming slightly porous, and I guess we should have kept up with the top dressing.
