What’s a Good Paint To Just Paint Random White Things?

I sprayed my boat with two-part linear polyurethane. It was great stuff. I love it. It worked fantastic. Still looks brand new if you wash it off. Never needs waxing. It’s gorgeous.

However, I have some little odds and ends to paint. I don’t have a compressor. I don’t have that type of system where I am anymore. Just some stuff I want to paint white. It’s not something that is walked on. It’s just a wall out on deck. It’s made of polyester resin. What would you recommend as a good budget simple paint to use with that? It’s not something for alwlgrip or even 2 part linear polyurethane.

In a pinch, I used some exterior “latex” house paint on my dagger boards with no primer and they look exactly the same five years later. The paint did not change at all in the rough Florida sun. So I have a lot of confidence in whatever is recommended. Looking to use non-marine if possible to not waste money.

As a second out on question, I might use some paint to do an area that is walked on a lot. What would I use for that?

The choices in this department are bewildering.

Thanks!

Re: What’s a Good Paint To Just Paint Random White Things?

Home Depot or Lowe’s OIL paint...usually floor and deck enamel Add a little Penetrol and it looks great. Covers over Total Boat epoxy primer / barrier coat (yes I know) and we are very happy with this combo on clean, lightly sanded aluminum.
Easy to blend in a repair. We tint it to “Swiss Coffee”, which is a nice off white color. Penetrol about 10 to 25 % in the oil enamel not the epoxy which we run as is cause it’s thick and covers well.
We’ve tried to match Lilly Pad green so we could sneak up on the Green Frog, but he’s use to dodging gators and hungry Acadians.
Kermit costumes are just too obvious and not available in manatee size.
Another round of eggnog. Yes.
Happy New Year.

For small brackets and bits, it seems to do as well as Interlux Britesides. Good gloss if you use good technique.

Rustoleum Marine "Topside" Paint. Good stuff and can be bought in most places including Home Despot.

That’s a lot of votes for this paint. And it’s already on board. In the form of a spray can so it’ll come out even better. No worries about brush marks or anything.

Do you think this stuff would be better than the rust oleum that everyone is recommending for places that get walked on? The rest oleum definitely doesn’t hold up to that. I have used it on some steps and it already came off.

Re: What’s a Good Paint To Just Paint Random White Things?

I've been using a one part polyurethane for years and years...Interlux Brightside.....comes in a variety of colors....easy to apply....you can brush it....roll it....tip it...West Marine carries it, but you can get it elsewhere...
Is it as good as the two part ??....hard to say...maybe not quite as durable, but I've used it topside for years and years without a lick of problems...

Do you have any experience using that on walking surfaces?

That’s pretty heavy duty stuff. I’ve definitely heard it works on topsides no problem. Buried in my original post I was asking a little bit about one that I could use on a walking surface as well. This is such a strong paint, I would think maybe it could stand up to foot traffic.

We used it on the topsides of a power boat several years back (including walking areas). We sprayed the main project.

No it's not as tough as the 2 part paints but we kept an extra quart and it was so easy to touch up with a cheap foam brush and unless you got inches away, you couldn't tell where the touch ups were.

We sold the boat a few years later. With no waxing, it was still nice and shiny.

I've used the rattle can on non-boat stuff and it never came out as nice.

Another vote for Rust Oleum. If you want the same sort of paint but with infinite colors, I've been using Kirby's of New Bedford. He'll make custom colors, and has a pretty good selection of stock colors.
Easypoxy is very durable--most durable one-part in my experience. Brightside a little less.

Re: What’s a Good Paint To Just Paint Random White Things?

Home Depot and Lowe’s is a Porch and Deck oil based enamel...as in...they designed it so you can walk on it. The Rustolum is thinner and we don’t think it covers as well or lasts as long. More expensive too.
We like the one part polyurethanes but they are way too thin and high gloss for old school but some people love it.
We like a softer look.
We are very impressed by the Total Boat epoxy primer / barrier coat.
Paint is like ice cream...every body has a favorite.
Happy trails.
