My hurth hbw50 just desinigrated on a voyage from CT. to Norfolk. What are the current up to date options for me? I will be doing the work myself (qualified). Any info. appreciated.

A few years ago I replaced a Hurth HBW50 with a Newage PRM60. It's a near drop in exchange, the dimensions and bolt pattern are the same as the Hurth, the only difference is the shift lever is on the other side so you'll have to make a new cable bracket. It's cone clutches are much more durable than the Hurth disc clutches. Cost was about the same as the rebuild kit for the Hurth. Got it from ASAP Supply in the UK, they will ship to the US.

A ZF5M is a direct replacement if you do not want to deal with any modifications.

Twin Disc

Twin Disc TMC40 is a good choice. The engine needs to go up 0.216". and the prop shaft needs to go back 0.157" Left hand engine, right hand prop.

Thanks for that. I found the many old threads that talk about undersizing of hbw50 for a 29hp diesel .I was never comfortable with the thing always screetched (sic) like a stuck pig and I got 100 hours from it since buying the boat last year. Only 475 hrs on the whole drive train. Perkins m30.
