Re: Whats this flaking off my wood?

Looks like varnish applied many, many, many, many years ago and left to deteriorate in the weather.

Needs to be stripped down to clean teak and then ?what do you want-- varnish, Cetol? oil? natural?

Could be anything that's been applied prior, but does it matter?

Sand with 60 grit and self priming brown paint was our saviour.

Peeling varnish over water-stained wood. No hope for returning it to being varnished wood, so Simi 60's advice applies.

Why do you say that? I'm not 100% sure of the condition but my guess is if one were so inclined, they could sand that golden again.

i’m going against the crowd. That’s Cetol.

you can tell by looking at the edges. Not the main face of the wood, but around the corner. It looks like Cetol

Old varnish. No biggie. If you can avoid sanding do so.
If the wood is in rough shape minwax makes a wood penetrator to restore lost cells in wood with epoxy. Now you can sand without tearing away material. You can two part bleach the wood to restore its original colour. I have Faux teak gunnel and cockpit sole and enjoy the Varnish Oil argument. Oil is a weekly event really. Varnish worst thing that can happen to wood if not kept up.
I’d use a heat gun on low a plastic spatula to remove as much old varnish possible. Then wood petrifier block sand replace any popped plugs. Drill any plugs on loose screws and address the screw hole.
I was an oil guy before casting nylons with wood content and texture, but there are some real fine marine varnishes
