Where do you attach your vice?

Hey guys, I found a vice on my new to me sailboat and I am pretty excited as I’ve always wanted one (it’s the small things in life!). I don’t readily see where I would attach it. Where is a good place? Examples or photos would be welcome! Thank you!

Re: Where do you attach your vice?

I’ve got so much vice that it’s pretty much spread all over the place.

I built a work bench into one side of the V-berth, to which my vise is bolted. Before that, I had it bolted to the underside of one of the settee hatches - just flipped it over to use.

I have a 1”x6” board long enough to span the cockpit seats. It has holes bored to fit the vice in a couple different of places and it does double duty as a fender board. I also tell my grandchildren it is a plank that they may have to walk if they don’t obey the captain quickly enough.

Re: Where do you attach your vice?

Our vice is bolted to a piece of 1/2"plywood, and stowed in a locker. Originally, on our previous boat, it formed the plug for the V-berth, for the triangle shaped cushion that made the berths connect at the head of the bed, and hung upside down there. It was a good height for indoor work, but we used it outside a lot, too, for doing rigging work.

Same as the last 3 posters; a board. Would be great to have a little workshop on board, but economies of space prevent that.

That is genius! I have mine on a long board that I clamp to the pulpit.

I have many vices, sailing is one of them actually.

But on my boat my vise is bolted the same way that toddster8 used to have his.

Like Tayana42 my vise can be bolted to several spots on a 2x6 fender board which can span the cockpit seats. I have also screwed or c-clamped it to a picnic table ashore and to the top of a wooden sea wall for heavier or messier work than I cared to do aboard.

Re: Where do you attach your vice?

On my workbench at home. I did run across a Formosa sailboat with a separate workshop that had one on the workbench in it.

Re: Where do you attach your vice?

Mine is attached to a small piece of plywood. I clamp it to a companionway step for use.

And whatever you do, don't buy the vice that mounts onto the top of a winch. You really don't want to shower the winch with filings and sawdust...

Re: Where do you attach your vice?

After carrying a small, conventional vice for lots of years, I bought a Harbor Freight Drill Press vice. It's a much smaller profile, but does all the things I've needed a vice to do. And it stores flat. Like others have commented, I have a plywood board with holes predrilled to bolt the vice to, and I can clamp it to the companionway stairs, or set it in the cockpit, or set it on a seawall if need be.

Re: Where do you attach your vice?

As many have above, it's bolted to a piece of 1" ply, right next to the vice is the base for the drill press so I can drill things held in the vice if need be.
