Re: Where to find HULL ID

By regulation:

A. The primary hull identification number must be affixed as follows:
• On boats with transoms, to the starboard outboard side of the transom within two inches of the top of the transom, gunwale, or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest.
• On boats without transoms or on boats on which it would be impractical to use the transom, to the starboard outboard side of the hull, aft, within one foot of the stern and within two inches of the top of the hull side, gunwale or hull/deck joint, whichever is lowest.
• On catamarans and pontoon boats which have readily replaceable hulls, to the aft crossbeam within one foot of the starboard hull attachment.
• If the hull identification number would not be visible, because of rails, fittings, or other accessories, the number must be affixed as near as possible to the location specified in the illustration below.

Not saying all manufacturers do it right, but that's where it is supposed to be.

Re: Where to find HULL ID

Addendum: Federally documented non-production boats might have therir hull numbers in other places, given the regulations on applying an assigned number at the time of documentation. Mine are on a fuel tank and an internal frame. If you are talking about a production boat, this is not a concern.

You may not have a hull ID number, depending on the year and country of manufacture of your boat.
As well, many if not all states in the US will do an inspection and assign a number if one is missing.

Should be on upper corner on the the stern starboard side. If boat was painted they may have inadvertently filled them in but still should be faintly visible. If totally obliterated it may have been done on purpose (to hide the original hull ID) and switched titles for a newer/different one.
Always good to check the hull ID to the title before you purchase a boat to make certain they match. Most of the time it is just a typo during the re-titling process and is just a minor hassle to get it fixed.
