Where to locate clock/barometer

The previous owner of my boat located the clock and barometer just a little above the waterline at the far end of the cabin. The location makes it difficult to get to as I usually leave the leaf on the table up on that side so I need to slide down along the settee cushion.

I'm thinking of moving both items. These are Weems and Plath items. I don't think the clock will be affected by being higher above the waterline, but what about the barometer? Will the increase in motion be detrimental to the barometer?

Re: Where to locate clock/barometer

Place it where it is easy to read and to adjust when needed.

Usual place is near a nav station. Or visible to everyone in the saloon, or in the pilot house.

Mount it securely. I have seen them fall off when a boat is rocking in a seaway, and some are heavy.

I don't think the motion of a sailboat would have anything to do with the measurement of barometric pressure. I'd put it wherever I wanted it.

Re: Where to locate clock/barometer

I have my clock and barometer strategically mounted to the bulkhead in my main cabin where I can peek at the time from the companionway.

It's also common to put them next to the radio or the SSB (if applicable) to remind skippers of radio nets/checks. It is also not unheard of to keep them on UTC/GMT, as shortwave broadcasts and nautical almanacs are typically scheduled for this format and not whatever time zone your boat happens to be in. Of course, if you only sail in one time zone, you haven't got this decision to make.

Re: Where to locate clock/barometer

It's a bit off topic. But if the clock stops working, just purchase a cheap battery powered wall clock and use the mechanism to replace the mechanism in the expensive bronze clock enclosure. Toss the inexpensive wall clock. Sometimes you have to modify the hands to fit the bronze enclosure, or other hands can be purchased online.
