MY winches are mounted conveniently where anything falling from them will fall into the water to join the number of winch handles that have met the same fate! I can imagine working gently on my winch mounted vice on something expensive - a rope clutch or something - the thing popping out of the vice - as things do when held in a way as to not damage them - and straight into the water. Perhaps a folding table mounted winch vice in the cabin? haha

Let me add some European brain power to this thread ;-)

In Europe yachts have a board to get on the dock while med-moored. You upgrade that to a 2" thick plank and fit two studs that go in both primaries or secondaries for a full featured bench in the cockpit!
