Re: Wind generator location on Mizzen

powsmias, the rule of thumb for land based turbines is “place it no closer to an obstruction than 250’”. Since we can’t do that, go as high as you can. The main complaint regarding production can ALWAYS be traced back to an installation that was too short.

Re: Wind generator location on Mizzen

This thread interests me as I'm building a ketch and I'd like to know :
  • where to mount a wind generator
  • which generator is preferred and what output?
  • also where to mount solar panels
But it is getting late now so I study all the posts and come back tomorrow.
Have a good night

We went a little higher than 2/3rds of the mizzen ht. to get clean air. Biggest down side to this location is it will interfere w/a staysl. We don't have a mizzen staysl yet, so not an issue so far. Have seen some mount it on top, but would only do that w/a light weight unit.

You need to have a mount that will reduce/eliminate vibration.

We like having diversified energy sources, but as discussed in many threads solar is more consistent and cheaper in the long run. If you are in the higher lats w/increased wind speeds, the wind gen would work fine.

Bang for the buck would emphasize/max out on solar first.
