With a transom hung rudder, you might like to look at the Jan Alkema rudder head mounted design. Essentially, the windvane rotates the servo blade which is constrained by lines to the quarters so that the whole assembly pivots about that point, and being hinged to the rudderhead, it turns the stock directly. An extra advantage is that if you have a hinged tiller, you can raise it and clear the cockpit whilst the windvane is in use.

Well, regardless of how old the thread is, I think it's interesting because on another thread a lot of discussion has occurred over my questions about a transom hing rudder and trim tabs, with quite a lot suggesting it won't work.

This thread seems to be leaning on contradicting that view.

I don't doubt how interesting this is... I sailed for years with an outboard rudder and wind vane on a trim tab. I know it works.
The reason I posted is to alert to the fact that he was making the suggestion below to the OP 3 years later....
