Re: Window Saga. New Thread. Small Question.

I guess a shade is a good idea too. Especially now because of the specific situation. Still need up attach the windows no matter what I’m doing for them.

I’m sure there are other similar products.
Several years ago I had a vehicle wrapped and the graphics which extended into the windows were adhered to the glass and allowed visibility. These lasted for years on a car which was not garaged and seldom washed. Don’t know how it would last on your polycarbonate.

Yes, the polycarbonate people were talking about getting the wrap like a bus would have over the windows. I wa thinking about it.

I was thinking about tints too.

But, I wanted the flexibility to have the windows act as heaters too on cold days. So I left them clear.

Your link or similar shade makes more sense for the clear windows. I had wanted to do an interior curtain/tint but exterior probably makes more sense.

Just need to know if something like that would abrade polycarbonate

All of this stuff about shade is welcome because it’ll save fuel for air conditioning, even though it’s off topic. Topic was “what’s the best way to capture the Wiley edges of the polycarbonate to keep them against the boat?’
But if you remove the physical factor, ie sun beating down causing a huge temp differential, you might not need the mechanical factor to hold the polycarbonate in place. Surely worth testing it before you spend time designing and fabricating a cunning and complicated solution.

I think they should still be held in place properly with more framing. It’s just the right thing to do. I don’t want to leave them open.

Ahh, fair enough. I misunderstood and thought you were just trying to avoid the expansion in the sunshine.

Re: Window Saga. New Thread. Small Question.

There is not really reason for H channel. Just a flat plate (SS or aluminum) wider than the gap between the windows and flat head screws holding it on or fashion washers. The only force you need is against the boat so the boat side of the H channel is just a waste.

Re: Window Saga. New Thread. Small Question.

Any thought of using rubber channel like used on old auto windows.
We used it several times fabricating car lifting forklifts, to hold windshields in.

I think the idea behind the H is no screws. Everything is held by adhesive. I don’t want to add the work of another dozen drill and fill holes.

I like to just stick it on and be done. Like the rest of the framing.

Won’t work. If it’s rubber, it’ll bend.

Re: Window Saga. New Thread. Small Question.

Hey Chotu,

did you find a solution? how are things coming along?

i'm not sure how close poly carbonate is to acrylic in character..., but

i just stumbled across this guy working with acrylic (jump to minute 12) and thought that the way the material bends in this example helps in some way

and as always, good luck!

Re: Window Saga. New Thread. Small Question.

Chotu,

I'm thinking fabricate some "steps" that can be placed over the windows....I've seen these on some cats...Leopard maybe ...the earlier models???.....the steps provide shade..but doesn't block the view...almost acting like exterior venetian blinds, but fixed.... strong enough you could step on them if needed...the steps can be made to attach to a frame that is located adjacent too, but not touching the window. You could experiment with the width and spacing of the "steps" by making a cardboard or plywood model...see if it works, before making the real thing....more steps, less width, etc....less steps, more width....somewhere here, should be a happy compromise...
just a thought.....

I've seen similar ideas with sport cars that have exaggerated sloping windows on the rear...

Re: Window Saga. New Thread. Small Question.

Yes. These steps were mentioned up thread. A good idea. These are side windows however, facing athwart ships.

But maybe.

I’ll see how things go after the H channel is put in place. Then window treatments to reduce interior heat will be considered

Remember, the thread was a simple question. How to capture the unruly edges of the polycarbonate. Question has nothing to do with heat really.

Re: Window Saga. New Thread. Small Question.

Exterior snap on (or "Lift-the -Dot") Window shades (Reflective yet see-thru) to block the sun.

Re: Window Saga. New Thread. Small Question.

Still waiting on my H channel, but the existing windows are finally perfect.

Even without the H channel, the windows don’t leak.
