And yes, that starboard leg is 18 inches in the air .........as meant to be The boat weight has to be taken by the keel, unless the legs were the size of tree trunks and the boat had the hull to match the legs - and even then...........

The idea is that the legs literally prop the boat up right - obviously if the keel is on a firm surface and the leg in soft poop (it can happen) she will keel over. The "trick" is to know what will be under you, before arrival (and sea going away ). and of course with enough weight on the starboard side she will rock over - not recommended in case the leg buckles.
I think I'd want her tied down, in this case on the starboard side, before climbing aboard and moving about, in that case.

What keeps the boat from tipping foward, and smashing the bow.

Or tipping backward and bashing the rudder? (way worse!)

That does happen. On smaller boats (than this) not unusual to see boats with nose or arse buried in the harbour mud......not fallen forward, just how she settled when tide left.......looks ungainly - but as long as boat re-floats before water floods inside no harm done.....no idea how something this size would react to something similar, my guess is more badly

Having a boat that will balance straight on it's keel helps but it's principally about where the weight is on the boat, and depending on the boat that may involve moving a few things around or adding weight (water jugs) to balance her up (actually more a case of adding insurance!)........and not having 15 people standing on the bow (or stern).

Picking your ground is also important.

Re: Wow! Look at the Legs on Her ! (NSFW)

Do you ever add additional legs to help with the balancing?

Say two legs on each side. One set forward, one set aft?

Re: Wow! Look at the Legs on Her ! (NSFW)

Oh, and just to say that if you are ever moored against a harbour wall (in a drying harbour ) and are not simply lying against the wall - then you only use the outside leg. She will either settle leaning against the wall or using the 1 leg - 50/50 on that to better the odds whichever way you want, just add weight to that side.

Why only the outside leg? an inside leg will either get hooked up on the wall itself (and boat still dropping ) or do much the same when it reaches the seabed as "Join" between seabed and wall is never a clean 90 degree L........and all the boats weight will move to the outboard leg. Now and again someone discovers that

Gwalarns keel is 700mm wide at the centreboard and will sit happily as long as the bottom is firm, you can move around on deck without upsetting her stability. Great for doing a scrub.
Did try to post a picture but my lack of expertise is showing.

Well, I'll be damned. I would have sworn that she was a bilge keeler. I stand corrected.

I think the NSFW is just a warning... as anyone who loves boats and is trying to work, while accessing this site.... can go off to never never land for a while.

I think others call this BOAT PORN....

so.. NSFW..... (as being on this site is not WORK!)

Re: Wow! Look at the Legs on Her ! (NSFW)

We were discussing this on a thread in 2009, but I couldn't find any companies that designed them & came up with a few thoughts on how to achieve this. I made preliminary scribbles at the time - see my "sheer legs" album. Now, if only I could get "IslandHopper"'s link to work... I plan to mess around with a few such concepts when I get the boatyard moving, in the Philippines. Several Brits have told me that this is commonplace there.

Re: Wow! Look at the Legs on Her ! (NSFW)

Maybe my thread should be merged with this as it's discussing largely the same thing...except the "sheer legs" idea is a viable solution, assuming you could spread the load and it's not too windy on the beam!
