In passing, the topic reminds me of this mad pirate mate (I am sure he would not mind the description) who alleges to be only yachtsman ever thrown in the clink at Lord Howe Island. The next morning he enquired of the police officer as to what was the offence. The officer politely replied on the lines of,

“No problems mate, you were just having as lot more fun than anyone else!”

As soon as he was sober enough to be released, he was let free without penalty.

At all times you MUST pass "the Attitude Test"

Police have the power over you and they expect you to act like you understand that. As soon as one starts berating them or not complying they will turn on you. It doesnt matter what country you are in- that parts just basic human nature.

As others have said, contact the consulate of your country as ask them for help. They will be the ones who will understand the local laws and they will be able to explain how the system works.

But just dont expect that the laws of your own country will protect you in theirs. They may not have a "right to remain silent" or an "innocent untill proven guilty" process that you expect. Of course most modern countries have similar policies, but certainly not all third world countries will be gentle in thier approach.

Bribes may work in some third world countries, but its doubtful any first world police officer will accept a bribe. Its likely you would just end up in more trouble.

Good Luck and stay out of trouble lol

Cheers
Oz

If you are arrested, try to make a call or get word to the consulate or embassy of your country. Get the contact for a good LOCAL Lawyer.
Behave politely, if the officials want a bribe wait, they'll let you know.

Don't think for a minute that your going to intimidate anyone..and try your damnedest not to embarrass or cause anyone to loose face.

It matter less what you're saying then what your body language is saying.... try and "speak" clearly.
Excellent advice... embarrased, apologetic and slightly humble.... helps if your good enough at subtly taking the piss out of yourself to make them smile and relax a bit.... something like..
Officer... "What is your country..??"
Me... " Sir, I am an English citizen..... (now a sheepish smile).... but... no one is perfect..." followed by a shrug...
Response is usually a a 30sec blank stare while it sinks in then a big grin or chuckle... I'm one of the lad's after a while... may not get me off straight away but it sure takes most of grief out of things..
All us 'bottom feeders' hate rich arrogant a$$oles.....

And to clarify the 'rich arrogant' remark I was refering to 3rd world where white = rich.....
