Changing the state of registration for a boat.

Hi guys I am looking at transporting a boat from florida to georgia and want to make it registered in georgia, so I was wondering if there was any special paperwork that needed to be filled out and how much it will cost.

Google up the Georgia boat registration page. Every state has one. Title should be all you need. My boats getting transferred to Florida, but we're documented. I've got a copy of our cancelled check showing we paid sales tax since they're nuts on sales tax in Florida!

When we brought our documentation into the florida office they didnt even ask the sale price at registration time. The original registration was 37$ and its been $4 since annually if your boat is more than 30 yrs old make sure you ask for antique vessel registration its only $4.

Florida has an antique vessel registration but Georgia does not.

Alright, thanks Chuck that will save me some time and keep me from looking like an idiot, also it doesn't have a name yet and it is a tossup between:
Between The Sheets
Crews Control
Nautical Smiles
Just wondering what you guys thought of those choices.

That's almost always handled by the County in which you will be residing. In some places it's the department of motor vehicles in some the registrar's offcie. If it's titled, you'll likely need to turn in the old registration and title and they'll issue new ones. Everywhere I've registered boats, the fee has been based on the boat value.

Most states have a certain time period in which you must do this after moving to that state or you will have to pay penalties.

Dont you have to pay sales (use)tax in the state you are moving to regardless if you paid it before? Maybe that just applies if you bought it in a state that doesnt have sales tax...?

Cheechako,

The taxes are not related to registration and are totally a state by state issue. Most states give you credit for sales / use taxes paid some place else and then allow you to pay any difference. For state registration you generally need to say where it was registered so the new state can be sure the title changes smoothly. Dinghy titles have been the bane of my existence with both boats having seriously screwed up dinghy titles.

It's part of the way they assure that the boat you want to register is not stolen. Registration has one purpose ONLY and that is to establish title. Taxes and other fees are all totally a different situation. It's the one advantage to US Documentation. If the USCG says you own the boat then you really do.

No
Wet Dream
Hakuna Matata
Odyssey
Osprey
Sea-Duction
Just Chilln

Or any of a number of really lame-overused ones.

I named a boat after an ex-Girlfriend of mine......she daid she wouldn't want a boat named after her
