I'll second Cockroft and Lameijer's book. Pretty much the standard textbook on interpreting the rules when I was studying.

It was but a figment in the authors' eyes when I was up for my masters... however the local library got in this massive tome for me with case law intepretations going all the way back to Sutton Hoo. I found it fascinating but then I also enjoyed compass work. Bit of a worry.
