Re: French Citizen, Permanent resident in Canada buying a french registered boat in U

Okay, French boat.

Yes go outside of the USA waters [I believe twelve miles] to engage in discussions and to settle your transaction so as to not import the boat into the USA and then comply with entry for temporary cruising in the USA to travel to BC. Don't tell anyone that the owner was soliciting to sell the boat in California, because he would have had to first import then register the boat to do such. Talking legally shady activity. Example, a survey should be done by owner not by a buyer and for sure no broker engagement.

When you get to Canada you will import the boat triggering PST 7% and GST 5%. Reference details as to how the basis is determined for each and bring the appropriate documentation as indicated previously.

Good news the Canadian - European Union Tariff [CEUT] rate applies to French made boats: So presently it should be duty free. No "ugly American" punitive tariffs.

The Harmonized Tariff Schedule chapter 89 applies for tariffs,

Reference the Canadian schedule of tariffs here:

https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-co...mod-1-eng.html

Relevant subchapter:

8903.10.00 00 Yachts and other vessels for pleasure or sports; rowing boats and canoes.
NMB 9.5%

CCCT, LDCT, UST, MT, MUST, CIAT, CT, CRT, IT, NT, SLT, PT, COLT, JT, PAT, HNT, KRT, CEUT, UAT, CPTPT: Free

GPT 5%

Happy Sailing. Don't forget to get a new courtesy Cannabis flag if you continue to fly your French flag as a foreign flagged vessel.

bp,

Not quite sure what you're saying, but...

What I said in #28 is:

March 5, 2018, CBSA Form BSF715-1

GST/HST 5%

PST 7%

Note the date last year.

I do not know about the 10% from the Trump stupidity, since mine happened a year ago.

But the 10% is not related to either GST/HST OR PST.

From what you say it's about an ADDITIONAL tax.

Is it for used boats, too?

Trudeau, in retaliation for the aluminum/steel duties imposed a number of new duties last July, one of which was 10% on a number of marine products. See this story on the issue from CBC News This duty is being applied to new and used boats coming in from the US.

Any idea about that tax with a boat coming from France?
