Insured vessel Database?

Tragically, last month a friend of my was lost at sea with his boat. His family is now trying to sort out the insurance but they have no information who the insurer was... Does anyone know if there is a general database that trustee's can get access to?
This also brought up a good point for our boat. Currently as liveaboards, our estate would be in the same situation if our boat was lost. With nowhere to store those kinds of documents what do other cruisers do to make sure the information needed regarding your boat remains available if the worst case scenario happens?

I don’t know of anything, maybe someone with more experience will come along.

Does the family have access to bank accounts? Boat insurance is usually once a year at the longest if not on payment plans, might be able to comb through bank transactions to figure out underwriter or broker.

It should be all on the guys email account. A quick look should find the documents? My insurance company sends me a PDF to print of if I want but who does that?
Cheers

Re: Insured vessel Database?

Good ideas but both email access and bank account access are going to take time to sort out. They were hoping to notify the insurance company and get that process started before they have access to those.
I just realized that this would be a similar problem if your house went up in flames with everyone inside... Guess that's why people have safety deposit boxes...

What do we do?

Simple. Printed copies of insurance policies are "on file" with key family members, along with copies of other key documents from vessel documentation papers to photocopies of passports, and anything else we think of.

Re: Insured vessel Database?

If you contact the last marina he was in, they might have the information you need. Marinas require insurance. Assuming he has not been out of a marina too very long.
