if you seek liability insurance there is no surey required.
for hull replacement there is always a survey needed.

Re: List of insurers that don't require a survey

State Farm didn't either for our old boats, which were on a lake. I doubt that any of your usual home/auto insurers will require a survey, but the actual marine insurance companies all will.

The Progressive ads are so all-pervasive, annoying and insulting that I refuse to do business with them. Don't want to encourage them further.

Very unwise, buying a boat without a survey.

Re: List of insurers that don't require a survey

Insurer survey requirements can differ depending on region, vessel’s age, size of vessel, your claims experience, etc. Insurers also change their underwriting criteria on a regular basis, so putting together a list might have little value.

Re: List of insurers that don't require a survey

BoatUS actually just changed, like a month ago, to not require a survey for most boats.

Beth led the analysis to convince them to make the change. Turned out that "insurance surveys" we're not adding much value . . . . Quite Different than "pre-purchase surveys".

Also insurers may have a short list of certain vessels/types which have cost them, disproportionately, over the years, and so require more frequent surveys--older, wooden or ferrocement boats, for example.

International Marine Insurance Services (IMIS) said they do demand a survey, even for liability-only insurance. And the representative made it pretty clear they don't like the idea of liability-only.

Re: List of insurers that don't require a survey

Your basic auto insurer usually wont require one for a recreational vessel... at least in non yacht sizes.

Really? It has worked out splendidly for us! I could never decide whether or not I wanted a hanked on survey or just a roller furling one so I just went without. We managed to make it all the way to the Bahamas and back without one!

Interesting about Boat US. I will look them up.

Tell Beth thank you. Boat US didn't insist on a survey on the boat we just purchased.

Who's buying???

We've got progressive for liability only, and we bought without a survey fwiw (a risk i was willing to take for the cash outlay we were looking at)

Re: List of insurers that don't require a survey

Wish this thread had started before I got an expensive/useless survey for liability only. Surveyor said - AFTER he collected the money - "I hate ferrocement boats."
Lived in dread for a week, but he came through (grudgingly).

Re: List of insurers that don't require a survey

I have Progessive but now liability only. Previously I had a full coverage policy. Problem was they were charging me $3800/yr. since the boat is 15 yr older I asked if I could reduce the insured amount. I was told they would "consider it" with a new survey.

I was not going to pay for a survey with only the chance they could reduce my premium. So I changed to liability with medical. Premium is now $800/yr.

I've never had a claim in over 20 yrs, so I'll take my chances.

Rich
