I was partially wrong on this. You may require approval from the province but not all the time. But you do follow the Federal guidelines for mooring buoys.

CCG does not "police" the waters. That is up to Law Enforcement (such as the RCMP).

You've actually got this somewhat backwards. Between Vancouver Island and the mainland is considered "inland waters" and the sea bed is under provincial jurisdiction. North of Vancouver Island is complicated but certainly not primarily provincial.

Re: mooring buoys Canada

Perhaps the solution to this trespasser is to give them some company... lots of company. Head out there with a few boats, raft up on either side, and party for days. Or just bring the loudest sound system you can get your hands on, a stinky generator, and blast the most piercingly loud frequency you can generate for hours, days, weeks, whatever it takes.

Just keep it up, doggedly, and make it clear that you've had enough and you will never stop until they leave. It's your buoy and it's time you got it back.

Re: mooring buoys Canada

I was hoping the OP had come back and updated this old thread with the final resolution. Oh well.

This appeared to have been a remote "destination" mooring that the OP rarely even visited. At one point they mentioned only having an old photo of the boat, and at another point they implied difficulty in getting there to even look at it.

My guess would have been that they simply let their permit/lease on the mooring expire. No longer their problem, and no additional effort or expense required on their part. Maybe go there and paint over the writing on the ball identifying it as theirs.

I have no great love for "destination" moorings dropped in formerly good anchorages, so my sympathies are more with the boat than any of the people involved. It's kinda sad when a boat is abandoned that way. Wish we knew what happened in the end.

No it is NOT in any way a remote destination. Comox is a busy boat (mostly smaller) harbour with several marinas surrounded by two towns/small cities.

Re: mooring buoys Canada

We anchored off Comox last August for a few nights. Delightful town! No lack of room to anchor although you need to make sure you do not obstruct access to the marina, or landing/takeoff of float planes. If I recall, we anchored in about 35' to 40' of water, with plenty of room to swing . . .

I do second members who think it would be polite of OP's to let us know final resolution (or still on going) of their issue.
