Pass the International Boat license in Australia to use it in Europe

Hi folks!

I arrived in Australia (Melbroune actually) 3months ago and will stay for the next few months here before to go back in Belgium.
And since few years I think about getting my boat license to rent boat when I go in holiday in south of france, Croatia, Spain,...
So I just need the license to drive on the coast or on river, lake.

But the problem is that I never had the time to follow course in Belgium to get it. As I have lots of free time here in Australia I think about trying to get the international license here but the problem is to know If I will be allow to drive a boat in Europe with an Australian license?

So I don't know if there is someone of you who could help me in my research.

I know here in Austrlia, there are different kind of license, one that we can get easily just few hundred bucks in all the difference state, but that we only can use here in Australia.

So Is there anybody who could tell me:
-First if it's possible to get a Australian license if your are a belgian resident?
-If yes which one do I need to get to be allowed to use in in Europe?
-And if by the way who know where I can get it and if you have any detail concerning the price, number of hours for the technical course and practical ones.

I hope someone will be able to help me concerning this because it's something I really could like to do but I know that when I ll be back in belgium I won't have the time again to get the license there.

Cheers!

Re: Pass the International Boat license in Australia to use it in Europe

Thank you for that.
But what's the restriction with this license ? We can only operate a boat in Victoria or in all the Australia ?
In any case it's not an International license.
And that's the problem because I would like to get an international license to can use a boat when I'll be back in Europe.
But I really don't know what kind of license I have to get to be sure to be allow to use it back home.

You can use it in all of Australia, dont know about international though.
From my limited knowledge, different boat licenses apply more to the size of the boat ie 200 tonne than just a one license covers all.

I believe that Yachting Australia now offer the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) in Australia. Try their website Yachting Australia for details.

Unfortunately the ICC is NOT a licence.....

The ICC or International Certificate of Competence is documentary assurance from one government to another that the holder is competent, meaning that you don’t have to conform to each country's individual certification requirements. It is not a qualification in its own right.

From what i understand you would first have to complete and pass a "RYA Day Skipper" course (5 Days) then apply for the "International Certificate of Competence" (ICC)......

International Certificate of Competence

Quote:
....only RYA Day Skipper practical certificates and above or MCA Certificates of Competency (delivered through the National Yacht Training Scheme) are recognised as evidence of competency. A list of RTCs delivering the scheme is available here.

RYA Day Skipper, Yacht Training Victoria

Best of luck....

Yes I just had a look on the website and it's what I though.
So It's something complementary that I will need if I get an International license here in Australia.

Now just need to know what license do I have to get and where?

Or is the Victoria boat license + de ICC would be enough ? ( I don't think so, it would be too easy)

Cheers

There is no requirement to complete the Day Skipper course provided you can demonstrate the required competence to a RYA accredited examiner. I did a 1 day assessment in the UK last year - basic theory test and practical assessment all rolled into 1 day on the water. While not a "Licence", it does document a minimum level of competence which appears to be acceptable to charter operators in Europe.

As i operate under commercial tickets i have had no use for the ICC so was not sure, but i am sure a Australian state boating ticket cannot be endorsed, hence why i added the quote from.... International Certificate of Competence

In Aus, a Car Drivers Licence is usually all you need to charter in most cases....

@Le-Blond, if you don't have much boating experience get a copy of the ICC handbook, study, then have a shot at the assesment....

Boat Books Australia

@justwaiting, the two situations available are in the link i posted....

In the site you linked, on the page i indicated

If you hold an RYA qualification (such as RYA Day Skipper practical or above), a simple application can be made through RYA/Yachting Australia.
If you do not hold such a qualification but are a yachtsman of significant experience, you can undertake an assessment to obtain the certificate. The assessment involves both theory and practical boat handling, and will take between 2 to 4 hours to complete.

Re: Pass the International Boat license in Australia to use it in Europe

Please excuse me, but is a license required for your own boat to operate in other countries? I always assumed I did not since I'm not required to have any license in my state, due to my old age....LOL
