Re: Re-use name for new boat (Transport Canada Large Vessel Registry)

Closing the registry of a vessel removes it from the Canadian Register of Vessels, and its name becomes available for others to use.

Conditions:
Only vessels that are free of mortgages can be closed voluntarily
If the vessel is sold to a qualified person, the request to close must come from the new owner.

To close a vessel registration, you must email: vr-ib@tc.gc.ca
and include the following:
vessel name
vessel official number
reason for closure (include the date of the vessel's destruction or removal from service, if applicable)
copy of Bill of Sale, if applicable

Re: Re-use name for new boat (Transport Canada Large Vessel Registry)

The Registry Rules for each country are usually clear, if a little complex. In the UK, for Small Ship Register, duplicate names are permitted. But for Part 1 Registry, names have to be unique, hence "Seabird" is unique v. "Seabird of Liverpool" or "Seabird of Southampton". Under Pt 1, if she's "x of Southampton", and Southampton is a port of Registry, she has to be registered in Southampton. But, if she's "x of Eastleigh "(Eastleigh is a suburb of Southampton), so long as Eastleigh isn't a Port of Registry, she can be registered in any British Port. That's why many Brit boats are "x of (a town nowhere the sea)". And has been pointed out already "Seabird III" is unique v "Seabird IV".
