Re-use name for new boat (Transport Canada Large Vessel Registry)

Looking to see if anyone has done something similar...

We currently have a boat registered in the Transport Canada Large Vessel Registry and are looking to buy a new boat and would like to "re-use" the name.

We are hoping/thinking we might be able to cancel the current boat name and then use it on the new boat.

Anyone done this?

Paperwork is easy enough. There are rituals to follow to appease the Gods.

Yep, and.....

If you have a religious belief system and follow those rituals you're a heretic.

If you're an atheist and follow those rituals, you're a hypocrite.

So....which is it??? LOL

<Please take as tongue in cheek>

I have reused boat name in Norway. Was no issues at all when registering in the shipping registry. Previous boat was sold after the new boat was registered, so for a brief period I had two boats registered with same name and homeport.

Probably depend on what happened with your old boat and its name. We bought a registered boat and kept its name ie just registered us as the new owner. Each registered boat has to have a unique name.

In the San Francisco bay there are several boats with the same name and hailing port. Not a problem whatever you want to call it, even if another boat has the same name.

Re: Re-use name for new boat (Transport Canada Large Vessel Registry)

I am in the US facing similar situation. My current boat is Marla Sue out of Seacrest Beach, FL. I plan on the new boat being Marla Sue out of St. Andrews, FL. I don't think USCG will have issue with it but how to find out how to make sure I don't offend any of the relevant deities. Where can I research the proper ritual for christening the new boat?

OP is asking about Canadian registry. In the Canada registry, multiple boats cannot have the same name (even if a different port of registry). Hence one sees names with "II" at end, etc.

I always think the best way is just to append II, III, IV, etc. to the name, if that is allowed in Canada. Makes a new name but keeps the connection. I always think of the various Wanderers the Hiscocks sailed and wrote about in their many books.

Re: Re-use name for new boat (Transport Canada Large Vessel Registry)

Christening a new boat and renaming an old boat are two different rituals. Both can be googled. Coast Guard does not care what you name your boat as long as you avoid things that offend or cause people to think you are in distress.

Yes it is the Canadian Registry that the OP is interested in, and it requires a unique boat name. As Kettlewell suggests, add a Roman numeral to make it unique ... ours has a VI

Simply cancel the registration of the first vessel and file registration of your new boat at the same time.
