Registering a boat out of state

Maybe a dumb question... I'm a NJ resident, and Im buying a boat in NY. We will keep the boat in NY for at least a season. Can/should I register a boat in NY? It seems like I really should register it in NY since it will be operating there but i've also been told that I must have a NY ID to do so.

Re: Registering a boat out of state

I can't speak specifically to NY registration law, but most state's laws are based on the amount of time and conditions under which a vessel will be used in that state, not the permanent residency of the vessel's owner.

I live in Iowa, but have a boat registered in Florida. They are happy to take anyone's money regardless of what state they reside in.

I'd call the county courthouse in the county you will be keeping your sailboat.
