I feel sure any surface ship is possibly doing a geodetic survey. Any info; they want about our movements is done subsurface. As is ours.

I assume the book you refer to is Blind Man's Bluff. Really great book. It was referred to me by a guy I used to dive with. He wouldn't or couldn't say much other than he was in ECM on subs and knew a lot about what happened in the book.

Oops! I thought I mentioned the name!
You're right; Blind Man's Bluff.
A really good read and a real eye opener. I tell people some of the things that took place and they think I'm making it up. Up to that point I always thought of the evil empire as the experts in aggressive cold war subterfuge and we were passive victims. Turns out that we were really good at this stuff as well.

Re: Russian spy ship right in my next rumb line

in 1976 they Russia was cranky allowing us to sail into St Petersburg on a 43 foot sailboat. Concern was the US could have a sub sneaking underneath.

Read a great book about NR-1, the US first deep submersible. Admiral Rickover forgot (really) to tell Congress it existed, so it was never designated a USS Navy vessel. It was the real spy workhorse until declassified in the mid 80's. Fast reading about a sub with wheels.

If you really get to studying Military Science, you’ll find a lot of interesting things about the old Soviet Military, like their tanks were designed to be defensive, not offensive and other surprising things.
Ours if your curious are definitely offensive tanks

Another good read is Scorpion Down, the USSR really did sink her in 1968 in retaliation of the US sinking(?) of one of their subs in the No Pacific. Howard Hughes ship Glomar Explorer raised a part of the Russian sub in the '80s.

When I was in Kuwait in between the two wars, both the Kuwaiti and the Iraqi’s had Russian T-72’s, our plan was to identify them by gun tube orientation.
No kidding, thankfully it didn’t come to that

What I know about depth charges. Don’t want to be near one when she explodes. Smile.

Before the Polaris missles my dad’s sub, USS Greyback had a huge dome on the bow of the boat. Ship could surface and they would roll out a Regulus missle. It could be launched from the surface and it was a one shot deal. Don’t remember the range.

Spy ships don’t dodge submarines. With satellites, deep sea acoustic buoy, and attack subs... they pretty much have no surprises.

Perhaps it's there to watch your reaction to a test of the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle?

Should be soon, no? I'd mosey up right close. Be safer there.

There were a lot of crazy/brave people back then, the F-106 for example had two weapons, the Genie rocket which carried a nuclear warhead and was supposed to be lobbed into a formation of Soviet Bombers, and if any survived, the F-106 was the second weapon, cause there was not enough fuel to return home, if there was a home and you were over the North Pole, and you didn’t want to survive that ejection.

The link will work better now

The last bracket (closing bracket) was in the wrong place
