The only reason we haven't done this is because of the possibility that we'd be treated (and be) a foreign vessel in US waters as long as we stay here. When we cast off this fall it may no longer be an issue.

Hi Sven.. if you bought your boat in the USA and it was originally registered as a US boat it can come and go freely.. in perpetuity..
When I bought my Hunter37 this was the case regardless of flag according to US C&I who dealt with all my stuff at Morehead City.
Myself however was a different matter.. subject to the 90days and out rule.

I would be interested in this, registration is allowed for non-citizen, non-residents but no flag? Aren't boats obliged to fly a flag matching their registration in some jurisdictions?

Re: Swedish Flag

Yes, I can confirm that the SXK will emit an International Certificate to non-swedish EU citizens. Also that the spanish sea cops (Guardia Civil) will accept that document as valid documentation for a Swedish-flagged boat. The insurance company also didn't have any issue with that (although I can't exclude the possibility that they'd raise issues if they had to cover an expensive incident).

On the other side, I can confirm beyond doubt (I found the actual Swedish law for it) that this does not entitle you to fly the Swedish flag.

Summary: I ended up moving to Belgium, which I recommend.

Re: Swedish Flag

The belgian reg is significantly pricier AFAIK, but indeed, etiquette says one should fly a flag...
