Re: US Ensign Theory

Still does not explain why the US flag was just a defaced version of the flag of the East India Company of Britain.

Both the US flag and the Malaysian flag look like the evolutionary descendants of the flag of the East India Company. And the common names for those two flags are remarkably similar as well. One is called 'stars & stripes' or 'old glory' (what happened to new glory?). The other is called 'glorious stripes' (or 'stripes of glory' depending on how you translate the noun+qualifier stack of jelur gemilang into the Englandischer habit of qualifier+noun).

So:

was it really, as Ben Franklin is reported, just a defaced version of the East India Company flag? If so, why?

Who made the choice?

What role did Ben Franklin play?

Was Ben F really a patriot or did he see himself as a European? And did Ben F become, as some have suggested, 'Americanised' - whatever that means?

Was imagination about a national flag so lacking that the East India Company flag had to be copied and defaced?

Was there no one who could come up with something as unique as, say, the maple leaf, or even the gorgeous flag of Democratic Korea?

For the flag of the East India Company, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_o..._India_Company
