If so Stu, the mansion owner has as much right to safely and within legal parameters, fly his drone offshore at leisure as much as the boat owner has the right to anchor offshore by the mansion?
Mind you by the time the 11 pm news gets out it may have turned into a UFO after all - that rum can be strong Jack Sparra

Re: What Can We Do About Drones?!?

I had considered purchasing a drone capable of carrying a camera awhile back one thing that I thought was interesting was that the GPS in the drone can be affected by a WiFi or blue tooth signal I can't remember which one it was maybe another CF member would know send a strong enough signal out and watch the drone fly off into the horizon.I think that I read about this when looking at drones on Amazon for what this may be worth.

I just looked on Amazon the information said that you can view real time video on your cellphone the drone must act as a WiFi hot spot probably a range of about 500 feet. I purchased a GoPro knock off a GeekPro the camera functions as a WiFi hot spot. I used an iPhone 4 I was no longer using it does eat the batteries up pretty quick though.

Relax - have another beer. he'll tire of it soon. much ado about nothing. can't believe people advocate recklessly discharging a firearm into the air. shoot at it and you will be on the news. keep a paper bag handy to put over your head for the news crews if you go the gun route.

Re: What Can We Do About Drones?!?

Drones can be flown without gps and bluetooth or a wifi connection. This will all blow over, no pun intended, by tomorrow. Have two beers and chill out, lock youself inside the boat and start that frigging genny up

Buy your own drone, less than $50 from Amazon, and have an inadvertent mid air collision. After all, it was your first drone and you haven't yet learned the fine points of flying.

I'm in Miami. What are my legal rights?

First instinct is to throw things at it.

Once when I was racing and passing an anchored recreational fisherman at a reasonable distance he threw a can of beer at us hitting the cabin because we were disturbing the fish....and because we were a yacht.

You do need to be careful shooting down a drone because some are capable of sending the pictures back to the operator. The operator can be in a world of his / her own watching a hooded monitor and recording the images. They could use that as evidence against the person with the shotgun or slingshot.

If a fisherman you're passing by hits you with a beer can I would say you're too close.

Re: What Can We Do About Drones?!?

As an owner of a quadcopter I would first try to talk to the guy. Follow the drone in your dingy back to the guy. Those things usually only have around a 10 min battery fly time. So he can't be far away. If the guy is a jerk and continues you could try a 2.4/5.8ghz jammer. As soon as you see his hovering over your boat enable it and watch as he looses control and visual data. Most drones will auto back to their start location. Some might do a fly away and crash into the water/land. Either way he learns his lesson.
