Re: What can't I name my boat?

When dreaming about the ocean going boat that I would buy when I retired I thought I would name her Freyja Njordsdötter. Just before I retired the Chinese government teferred to the USA as a "mincing rascal" and I thought, what a great name for a boat! But when I found the boat I wanted her name was Blind Faith and my wife, an Eric Clapton fan, said that name is perfect! So she remains Blind Faith. Her dinghy will be Can't Find My Way Home.

Re: What can't I name my boat?

BTW, there are more than 20 USCG documented vessels named Blind Faith.

My rule is no more than 5 letters and if you want to check it out stand in the shower with the door closed and see if you can shout it to someone outside, if you can it will work in a storm over VHF.

Re: What can't I name my boat?

You could call your boat

'1597'

That's the year that the word unknown was first 'known'

So its not really unknown..but then i rather doubt anyone would 'know' the meaning of 1597, being a quite obscure reference.

you'll have your unknown. Sort of.

In the meantime I've started a page with the name "SV Unknown" as a place holder.

I have to say it's kind of grown on me for its implications (ie into the unknown).
However I could see how this could create some confusion over VHF.

Are there names that one simply cannot have (like mayday) and do you think unknown would fall into this category?

Thanks
Was gonna use FERFEXAYK for mine and could just imagine the coast guard pullin me over "ferfexayk pull over"

There's no need to display the boat's new name (with "home" port) unless you want it documented.

Re: What can't I name my boat?

If the USCG believes a proposed boat name is offensive, you are facing trouble.

I hear that if one repeats their wife's name three times quickly their wife disappears

If you Federally Document your vessel you cannot have a name that is already taken.

Not true.

I believe it is that you cannot have same name and same hailing port.
