In the meantime I've started a page with the name "SV Unknown" as a place holder.

I have to say it's kind of grown on me for its implications (ie into the unknown).
However I could see how this could create some confusion over VHF.

Are there names that one simply cannot have (like mayday) and do you think unknown would fall into this category?

Thanks
Personally, I'd avoid the following:

RMS Titanic
RMS Lusitania
MS Achille Lauro
USS Indianapolis

And as mentioned, that's not true either. There is another boat named the same as mine with the same hailing port.

Same as English 'Chimera', a mythical beast composed of parts of many animals - lions head, serpents tail, and a goat's head growing from the middle of her back. The chimera was a fearsome fire-breathing female creature. She was slain by Bellerophon, a son of Posidon.

I raced on that boat. Owner was a guy named Jerry and every year or two he would get a new boat built each bigger than the last. When he told his wife he was building a 50 footer she put her foot down and said "no more boats or I will divorce you." And that is where Fujimo comes from.

Great guy. He was from the Great Lakes but moved the boat coast to coast for regattas. Treated his crew like kings.

Thanks for the fill in, and for affirming that my memory hasn't gone completely. Sounds like a good chap to crew for!

Re: What can't I name my boat?

Fairly common I think. Ive seen boat names containing the ex's name which has been X'ed out.

Only a bit less foolish than getting someone's name tatooed on your hide.

And then there's the boat I spotted (on the hard, and I may have mentioned this before) with a woman's name - spelled differently on bow and stern.

Re: What can't I name my boat?

There's a video on YouTube of a guy sailing offshore who comes across an abandoned sailboat named "Escape Pod". He called the Coast Guard and the name did cause confusion.

THE VIDEO

(Confusion starts at 11:26 if the time link did not work.)

Re: What can't I name my boat?

I checked several of the Freedom Anapolis, MD boats and found that the documentation is expired. Does that make a difference?
