Fire Destroys Two Boats at Oz Marina

A fire destroyed two boats and another one was badly damaged two nights ago at a marina in Port Stephens, N.S.W. It was at Soldiers Point. Ironically we are looking at purchasing an apartment about 250 meters from this marina. It has got me thinking about how safe is your boat in a marina or is it wiser to anchor/pick up a mooring buoy. I'm sure there are good and bad points for either.

Just a fortnight ago here on the Gold Coast a luxury launch burnt and sank. It was at anchor away from anybody else. Thankfully nobody was hurt as they were alerted by fire alarms fitted on the boat. Fire crews arrived too late to be effective. Perhaps if the fire had broken out while on a marina the damage may have been minimised due to the greater accessability of fire fighting equipment etc. Perhaps not but it goes to show that it can happen anywhere and the risk should not be treated lightly IMHO .

Cheers

It certainly can happen anywhere. It is interesting that both of these fires happened at night. And the moral of this story is that smoke detectors do save lives.
