Med Cruz '13

Sharing my trip....... sorry adventure.
Marmaris, Turkey to Symi, Milos, Santorini, Pylos, Greece then across to Rocella Italy up Messina Straits, Milazzo, Cefalu, Palermo, in Sicily.
Over to Sardinia then onto Formentera, then main coast Spain, Gib, then Faro.

Very enjoyable inc. a few storms in May, with wave heights at 3/4 metres, with a nice wind from the east which died out, but immediately came up again directly from the west. A "nightmare" as we were still coping with the easterly waves.
Yes, this in-turn blew us off course 45 miles at night ! Oh, the Ionian.

Prices for Marinas quite good at Turkey, Symi harbour, (a beautiful little Greek town). Santorini well that took 3 hours to find an anchorage in the dark.
Ended up at Finikia north side of the island. Anchorage off Oia near Ammoudiou beach. It was just the 365 steps up to the top that killed you.

Pylos free, Yes free, no one wants to own up to who owns it.
Apparently, two German guys bought it, then disowned it when the town got a grant from the EU and put all the local fishing boats in there.
But it's free at the moment. No Electric or Water. But free moorings.
And a scruffy guy takes your mooring lines then mentions 10 euros. But you don't have to pay him.
Italy and Sicily starts getting expensive anything up to 45 euros.
But we had a budget and used many anchorages in nearby bays, albeit the gov'mt wants you 300 metres off shore. Difficult at the time with a punctured dinghy that would on operate within 100 metres !
Portugal and Spain very expensive 75 euros with tax.
Gib marinas........ only if they like the look of your boat, or they say "try the Spanish side". Which we did and found a near empty marina for 25 euros a night. La Alcaidesa, about half a mile walk to the Gib runway then into town.

But enjoyable

Re: Med Cruz '13

we are in lagos headed the other way -- our problem is we spent to much time in the azores after the crossing and are running short on our visa - so a quick run to the balerics then in early sept to tunisia for the winter --
boat is soulmates - jeanneau ds40 so if you see us at hook say hi -- our next real stop is la lina which all the folks here say is cheap and nice
cheers

Apparently 2 x marinas in Cartagena now, we ended up where you can moor next to Burger King and a few shops. We didn't stay just wanted to fill up water tank.

Just past Gib... as you head up the bay keep going till you clear the airport runway and you'll come to some breakwaters... hang a right and its in front off you... used to be a great anchorage with all round protection in 3-5 metres... have heard that's being discouraged these days.. excellent fresh produce market.. much better than the Gib rip-off.
Gib's good for cheap booze and smokes and luxury UK goods and holidays for 'Brits' who don't like 'Furrineers'..

la linea has some great bars and tapa restuarants, lots of hookers! and overflowing with fragrant morrocan chocolate!

don't try crossing over to gib in your dinghy,as you are liable to be shot at by the spanish border guards!
