Virginia Marinas

I’m getting ready to move my boat out of MD and am looking for a decent marina in Virginia. I’ve done a search on here but all Chesapeake threads talk about Annapolis mostly, which is where I am, and 1) it’s in MD which is very restrictive currently, and 2) outrageously expensive. Any suggestions?

a. Move south of Annapolis and it gets cheaper.
b. Virginia property tax is charged based on where the boat is moored. 2% every year, as high as 3.6% in some counties.

I"m not sure about that...Virginia Beach says 0% property tax on boats. I can find state tax other than on purchase price, and that's once.

I"m no expert and could be wrong.

Where in Virginia?

Above or below Tangier Island. East side or West?

In my area, there are lots of nice marinas. Little Creek alone has 5 marinas. 2 of which are boatyards also.

Usually around $9/ft

This won’t be a permanent home, just until it warms up a bit. Then heading north. I’m not worried about the tax. Doesn’t necessarily matter where, just not MD. A small airport nearby would be nice. West side is easier if I drive I suppose, but not required.

Are you in NC and commuting? If not, you might update your profile.

In Little Creek I think well of Cobb's Marina. Good folks, family-owned business. All the other marinas are owned by the same holding company (Vinings) which is in bankruptcy and receivership. I would not put my boat in any of them. Too risky.

You might also look at Cape Charles, especially if driving up from NC.

Is yours the Southerly 57 S&J Yachts sold a few years ago? If so, I've been on your boat.

Re: Virginia Marinas

At little creek, Cobbs does have. Good reputation but limited availability if the boat is over 40ft. Most of the other marinas have been sold and a few are being nicely renovated. Close to Norfolk airport with commercial flights. Deltaville is about half the cost and a nice small, quiet town. There is also an airport near but very short runway for small planes. Hummel field in Saluda.

Yes, I am in NC, holed up for a variety of reasons, including the obvious. I did get the boat from S&J, but last fall. One owner boat before I got her. Thanks for the good info about Vinings. I’ll be a semi live aboard, as I have too many animals to fully escape, but I don’t plan on “home harbor” for the most part.

This could be true, but you really need to check the different counties/cities.

Hampton, Norfolk, Poquoson, Lancaster, Portsmouth were or are essentially zero.Perhaps Gloucester as well. Middlesex (Deltaville) still taxes, but has been studying reduction.

Okay.

Cobb's Marina in Little Creek is great. Working boatyard. Limited big slips so get on their waiting list soonest even if you drop off. David Beens is dockmaster. Tell him I sent you.

Also consider Bluewater Yachting Center in Hampton. More of a destination marina but they do have services. David Farlow is general manager. Again, tell him I sent you.

There is another marina on the northeast side of Hampton with a good reputation. I've never been in there.

Cape Charles is lovely and driving up from NC you can run out over the bridge-tunnel and be there pretty quickly. There is a municipal marina and a private yacht yard. I've been in and out of both and had a good experience.

Deltaville would be an ugly drive and I at least would start not visiting the boat because it's too hard. YMMV.

Are you amenable to NC? I'm thinking Coinjock. With your boat, board up, you could get some sailing in on the bays.

You said your boat is in Annapolis. So am I. *grin* If you want me to drop by and look at her just let me know. I'm leaving Friday on a delivery but should be home Wednesday following. Drop me a note if I can help dave@auspiciousworks.com.

Your boat from Annapolis to Hampton Roads should be about 20 hours. Only five places of significance to pay attention to on the way down. Easy trip even single-handed.
