Washington, DC Area Liveaboard Marina information ?

Looking for information on Washington DC area marinas, good or bad. Have you lived aboard in this area? Do you have any information I can use?

Thanks!
Craig

What are you looking for? Do you have a boat? What kind? How close to Washington would work for you? Planned length of stay?

Going to be a 42 foot boat, not sure of the measured length yet. Will be in the area for about 5 years. Close to a Metro station is really the driving concern.

Ah found the proper thread below. So evidently this is not going to happen. DC is quite resistant to liveaboards from my reading. So now we will have to figure something else out. Thanks Bill!

Gangplank Marina in Washington Channel still allows liveaboards. It is walking distance to Metro Rail and the grocery store. It is also difficult to get a slip. You may have to buy a derelict boat with a liveaboard slip and haul it off to the graveyard.

Hey Drew,
Thanks for this info. I found the information on the Gangplank and have heard that the waiting list is interminable, the amenities poor and prices high.

There is another option for some. It's Capital Yacht Club, next door to the Gangplank. You have to join with a healthy initiation fee and with two members to sponsor you. It's cost-effective if you stay more than 2-3 years.

A permanent slip assignment for a 42 footer could take 1-2 years, but in the interim they do their best to accommodate new members by moving them around. Sort of like musical chairs. Occasionally, you have to get your boat out of the marina (like to anchor just off the docks) until you can come back.

Also, if it's a power boat, you might get a slip at Washington Marina, near CYC and Gangplank.

That's about it, I'm afraid.

Re: Washington, DC Area Liveaboard Marina information ?

I just contacted Gangplank marina and they said they are no longer accepting liveaboard applications. I could buy someone's privledge if someone was looking to sell it but they don't track that sort of thing.
