Re: Another Message in a Bottle, Found!

I must admit to having launched a couple on our trips. So far, I have not had any response, but I think it would be really exciting both to find one and to hear back from one.

Re: Another Message in a Bottle, Found!

Haters gonna hate... I think people bitch and complain because their own lives are barren of compassion for others.

When I was in my 20's my dad and I sailed from San Diego to Hawaii and back, just the two of us. It profoundly locked in my love of the sea and of sailboats. During that trip I dropped my own bottle into the deep blue hoping someone would find it. It contained a Polaroid pic of dad and me taken that day and a note about our journey together. If it was found, I never heard. My dad is now 85 and has stage 6 Alzheimer's - what I wouldn't give to have that photo...

Wendi,

Some friendly questions here:

What was the message in the bottle?

And were your messages the same in all bottles?

And was it a wine bottle, beer bottle, or what?

Maybe I'm stupid, but I don't mind glass bottles.
It's all that plastic that makes my stomach churn.

Nope, not stupid. Glass returns to the earth. Plastic is forever. Close enough any way.

I love messages in bottles. A little floating time capsule.

What they said.
Plus I would so enjoy finding one.

"Based on Holling C. Holling's book of the same name, Paddle to the Sea is Bill Mason's film adaptation of the classic tale of an Indian boy who sets out to carve a man and a canoe. Calling the man "Paddle to the Sea," he sets his carving down on a frozen stream to await spring’s arrival. The film follows the adventures that befall the canoe on its long odyssey from Lake Superior to the sea."

This is the only time I've ever seen HcH mentioned, ever, other than my search a few years ago to see if the book was available (Book of Cowboys, The by Holling C Holling - First Edition - 1936 - from Black Sheep Books and Biblio.com). He wrote one of my favorite kid books, Cowboys, with an orange cover; his name struck me as so odd I remembered it over any of the many other authors I read in my childhood...

Somehow the thumb dive don't have the same appeal? The bottle would have to be upgraded.

Re: Another Message in a Bottle, Found!

One of my relatives wrote a parting/farewell message and put it in a bottle & threw it overboard halfway across the Indian Ocean when he was on the ship going to fight in Europe in the first WW. (Left from Freemantle, Australia)
He was killed not long after arriving at the battlefront.
3 years after the war was over it was found on an isolated beach North of Pt Headland and the letter returned to the widow in Western Victoria, Australia.
In perfect condition right up to today & kept preserved for family pass-me-downs..............

Re: Another Message in a Bottle, Found!

I was on Grand Turk on Christmas. There were many bottles on the beach but never thought to see if any had caps or messages. I would say for every bottle I had seen there were at least 10 sandals.

Found one once on the Texas coast. Bible verses in Spanish. I envisioned them being scribbled on an especially bad night in the GOM.

I agree, glass is ok, and if it sinks there will be a very appreciative octopus somewhere to put it to good use.

The message was handwritten, told about where I was, that I was sailing across, how I felt that day, phone number and email, asked them to contact me when they found it.
All messages were a little different. Just rolled up, shoved in, was always in a wine bottle, I figured the cork would stay put pretty well.

Yes.

Love BruceS story too.

The chances of recovery are so slim
