Bahamas 1977

A college student is doing something with our journal/log from our 13 years of cruising the Bahamas and Caribe . Re -reading our log after 39 years we are surprised at the differences in cost and what was felt to be necessary equipment . We needed motor repair to our Volvo MD2B and had to stay at the dock in Nassau for ten days , $ 16.00 per day . Wow , what would it be today .
Only electronics were a C.B. radio [ only thing we used ], a VHF , a fish flasher sounder . Interior lites were mostly kerosene , cooking was kero . Had a big 8 D battery only . water tank">Fresh water tank was 29 gallons , fuel was 20 gallons .

Continuing ,
Reading the log it seems that we ate grouper , lobster and conch all thru the Bahamas . Pole spear , mask , flippers and snorkel.
My wife was in the habit of baking bread , cinnamon rolls , cinnamon bread and banana bread . When she had the kero oven Back then there was lite she would make much more than we could eat . We then traded for canned goods and fish , goat flesh or what ever .
Back then once you got south of Georgetown there was not much that money could buy . Each island might have a small store but they had nothing to sell !

It's difficult to put this into perspective without knowing the details of your boat.

That's not changed.
Weird little local stores in the Exumas with nothing on the shelves.

Dunno how or why they stay open

Re: Bahamas 1977

You were lucky to be born early enough to do your cruising back then! Today there are just so many boats and people everywhere.

Expensive or not, I simply wish I were alive before grp and social support made cruising a common pastime.

Continue -- Boat was a 1965 Chas. Morgan 34 , centerboard sloop . Bought for $13,500 which was more than we paid for our house . We took $2,500 and in first 13 moths we spent $1,100 .Was not much to buy . From the Turks we spent 66 days in Haiti where a meal could be had for six cents or a full course meal in a hotel cost $1.75 .
