Bikes on board...and where do you keep the spares

As far back as I can remember, every bike I've ever owned has had a saddle bag on it, with just a few basic things, such as spare tube, tire levers, etc. Where do you store these items while cruising? Especially as you get to areas where theft is more common?

I just had my entire bike stripped in Miami Beach. Took my pump, and saddle bag with tools, tube, etc. As annoyed as I am, I know it's partially my own fault for locking it up at the same spot, too long, and too often, even though I thought it was a safer area, due to it being on a dead end, in a residential area.

The alternative, I guess is to just throw all that stuff in my back pack, but I'm so absent minded, that I fear being miles from home, with a flat, and the spare tube and tools sitting back on the boat.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I guess for one, even thought it's overpriced, I could get the Dahon seat post pump.

My wife uses a clip on bag that snaps onto a fitting on the handle bars. When using the bike, she uses it instead of a purse or puts her purse in it. When we get somewhere she unhooks the bag and carries it. It would be cool if they made it with a shoulder strap.
