Let's step thru your imaginary scenario.

You arrive at Key West (or Nassau, or Georgetown, etc.), you anchor out but it's season and you end up towards the north end of Fleming Key. You get up the next morning and decide to bike around KW. Launch the dinghy and get the motor running.

Time :00
Lower 1st MTB into dinghy

Time :05
Start the 20 minute ride to Key West Bight dinghy dock. Dodge the sport fisher boats coming out of Garrison Bight as they put out a 3'-4' wake which will swamp the dinghy. Once at the dock, hopefully you can push enough dinghies out of the way at the floating dock to make unloading bike easier, if not, it's the fixed dock.

Time :25
Arrive at the dinghy dock, unload the bike and walk it to the bike rack in front of the Oyster Bar, lock it up.

Time :30
Start the dinghy ride back to the boat

Time :50
Arrive at the boat to load the second bike

Time :55
Start the 20 minute ride back to the dinghy dock. Dodge more power boats.

Time 1:15
Arrive at dinghy dock, unload 2nd bike, lock it with the 1st one.

Time 1:20
Start ride back to the boat to pick up person #2

Time 1:40
Arrive at boat, person #2 boards dinghy

Time 1:45
Start ride back to dinghy dock

Time 2:05
Arrive at dinghy dock

Time 2:10
Arrive at locked bikes. Perform maintenance as the bikes were lashed to the lifelines and salt spray rusted the hell out of everything.

We would have been riding our folding bikes (with zero rust as they're stored below) at time :30. I would have been out of the mood after 2+ hours of screwing around.

YMMV!

Re: Folding Bikes

Why not pick a more crowded place and anchor 15 miles away from it?

You're right, for you, it won't work.

For everyone else who said they do it, and the people I showed you doing it, it will work. I won't be anchoring anywhere there's a 20 minute dinghy ride to a dock.

As for folded bikes, that's what I advocated from my first message.

That scenario you just laid out also depends on the tender you have . My zodiac rib could do both bikes and 2 ppl into the dock at one time. (Same as it could with the dahon folder I actually have) a second bike and person would likely add about 3 minutes to the first trip. No second or third needed.

I row my tender so 20 min is just about normal for me. ( gotta get my upper body workout somehow) ( becides with my draft I can anchor just as close or closer than the big cats)

Re: Folding Bikes

In the scenario the dinghy gets swamped. What would you rather have in a swamped dinghy? Expensive folding bikes or a cheap bike. Also you don't give a time frame for how long you're staying in Key West. unload the full size bikes and then leave them chained up until it's time to go. Even though the crime rate is low in Key West I would not leave an expensive folding bike chained up overnight.

What's wrong with you?

Give it a rest and move on.

Sure, rowing will make it more difficult. There's lots of things you can do to make it more difficult. But if you wanna get bikes to shore, I'm guessing you'll do it the easiest way you can, unless you're trying to take 2 hours.

Re: Folding Bikes

The CF 'controversial topics' list:
  • guns
  • anchors
  • AGW
  • ...bikes??
What IS it about cruising that makes bickering on CF seem entertaining by comparison?

No getting swamped in my dinghy.

Why would I leave a folder in KW overnight? They fit in the dinghy along with us.

Re: Folding Bikes

I didn't call him names or insult him or tell him what he can do. I said he could get someone killed if he keeps going and he's unfit.
"if you can no longer lift 35 pounds, MAYBE it's time to stop sailing." Can you not tell the difference from a jackass trying to tell me what I can talk about? You're really fishing...

Finally, at last, a useful observation.
For those still wishing to argue around in circles, time to get on your bikes and find a cycling forum. This thread is near to being closed.
Thanks.

Re: Folding Bikes

I've been trying to point out the advantages and disadvantages of different choices. Here is another one about scooters: in many areas they may not be legal. And if memory serves me correct in some states to be a moped(legal) it must have a seat but you do not have to sit on that seat, you can stand.Click image for larger version

This is a major reason I sold my scooter, because police would pull me over and I would have to argue whether it's legal or not for me to drive it. I never got a ticket but I just didn't like the feeling. And as stated earlier it's just hard to carry stuff on. But it sure was fun. And easy to transport.PS mine was gas powered. I would definitely go electric if I did it again. One more thing I actually carried the state statutes on the definition of a moped to show to the police because they don't know the law. many recommended I ride on the sidewalk which is illegal but if they want me to ride on the sidewalk I was happy with that
