Re: Folding Bikes

I doubt it! we have them on the back of the car in winter quite often & our roads get "salted" heavily, so the bikes probably get more salt on themtehn on the dingitrips ashore & back. the "biggest" corrosion prob we have is between the aluminum spoke nipples& the ss-rim grommets resulting in broken nipples now & then. a little freshwaterrinse would avoid that.
of course "storing" the bikes along the lifelines while sailing would finish tehm off quickly!

Re: Folding Bikes

My wife and I had bought a pair of excellent folding Dahons in Newport, RI about ten years ago. They were fairly light and we used them until just recently as they were included in the equipment with the sale of our boat. I never regretted the expense of these folding bikes at around $600 each. They were all aluminum and stainless beauties and always problem free; however, I see other possibilities.

I just bought a 24" Raleigh bicycle on Craigslist for $30 that needed only an $8 cable fix. With the quick disconnect fore and aft wheels, as well as the quick disconnect lever on the seat post, this bike fits into storage space similar to the Dahons.

I think the quick disconnects can surpass the advantages of folding and result in lighter weight pieces for more variable storage options.

That it's not as hard as you make out.

And about the rust, those bikes have been on that boat for one year in that video, no signs of rusting out.

Now show it with 2 bikes, 2 people, like my original post stated!

I don't really care if you want to carry a Harley Roadster on your dinghy.

I am offering to those unsuspecting soles that carrying bikes on a dinghy is not an easy task, hence, the lighter and smaller, the better, IMO!

That video IS ferrying two bikes and two people. Just not in one trip. Making do.

Full size mountain bikes from a 31 foot sailboat to a 6 foot dinghy. Is it magic?
There is a difference between someone handing you a 35# bike and having to pick it up off a deck and lift over the lifelines while standing in a dingly alongside the boat. I say 35# bike because it will probably weigh at least that when equipped if you are starting with something close to 30# stripped. Racks, panniers, theft proof lock, that make the bike useful ashore add weight. It's fairly easy to get my 30# BikeFriday onto the dock or into the dinghy. A just 5# heavier cheap folding bike is at my limit and chancy if I make a miscalculaton in the process. Granted I'm 72 so not as strong as a young buck but others of retirment age or women will be greatly affected by any additional weight.

Re: Folding Bikes

I'm thinking if you can no longer lift 35 pounds, maybe it's time to stop sailing. There's times you need more strength than that you save your or a passenger's life.

But pulling a bike up with a rope is much easier than trying to push it over your head or pick up while squatting. Lines and pulleys make everything easier...

Re: Folding Bikes

This is why you get folding electric scooters.

No Sweat

<24 lbs all aluminum

Will go 24 miles at 18 mph

Small enough to fit anywhere even on a small boat

When you're appointed King, you can make such a rule!

I don't find the benefit worth the effort you are describing.

Re: Folding Bikes

I don't need to make rules. But I wouldn't sail under anyone who's that frail. I'd take him sailing, but he certainly wouldn't be my skipper.

The effort I described is less effort than you'd expend doing it your way. Make it harder on yourself if you want, if that justifies your "it's too hard" argument.

Everything's a compromise. I had a gas-powered scooter and it was great. But that little carburetor on a basically chainsaw engine needed constant maintenance. So Electric would be an improvement if you have a good charging source. But the main problem I had with it is it was a pain carrying things , the tiny wheels made it unstable if I had a heavy backpack and you could only fit so much by your feet.

My new Paratrooper weighs 500 grams more than a carton of my favourite beer, never have/had a problem lifting them

Since your solution only covered half of my requirements, can I consider what you are doing as 'half-assed'?

BTW, you never did explain how your dinghy gets back to the boat by itself to pick up the second person and second bike.
