Question How do you know when you got a fish?

I just bought good fishing pole with a penn 30 LW

But the line/rod doesn't make any sound. Like those clicking sound you see in videos. So how can I know when i got a fish? It seems like the rod won't make a sound. But I'm not sure

Sorry for the newbie question. This is the first time I'm trying to fish from our boat

Be specific, not generic, with the reel model for a detailed answer. Penn has produced many level wind reels over many years. All I have ever encountered had a “clicker” which could be engaged or disengaged, usually located opposite the drag adjustment.

If all else fails, put one of these on the end of the rod.

I wrote the exact reel model in the initial post already.

A bell. Penn doesn’t make a 30LW. Is it a 30 TW? A 113 HLW?

My apologies! Penn calls that a 30SLW. The black button on the side opposite the handle appears to be the clicker. If you push it forward, that should engage the clicker, but I am not familiar with this specific reel. Sometimes, when they are new, the clickers are tight.

That black button on the side turns, yes. But it doesn't click when i turn it or even i pull the line.

I couldn't figure out what's that black button for to be honest

It moves forward. It should slide back anf forth. It is probably stiff.

Flip your drag switch forward, and tighten the "ships wheel" on the handle until the drag starts to tighten. As you tighten it it should start to click.

You were so right dude! I was literally thinking about buying another reel because of this.

You rock! Thank you!

Now i have another question for you...

Look at the pic. Inside part is broken) chipped and because of that it chafes the line everytime i reel in.

Is there a quick and easy way to fix this?

Not quick but fairly easy, the only way I know of is to replace the whole guide. You can have someone else do it so it matches if you're worried about cosmetics, but some (me, anyway) find it 'cathartic' to do it themselves. All you really need is some strong thread, a razor blade and some clear nail polish. Oh, and a little patience.

The clicker is shown in the first photo; it slides west-northwest, east-southeast as oriented in the picture. Typically with Penn reels, the 'clicker' is on when the button is closest to the spool axis, and should operate whenever the spool is turned, regardless of the star drag adjustment.

Have no experience with that particular model though.
