Maiden movie

Compelling documentary on the all-women crewed 1989 Whitbread RTW Race effort, told by people who were there. Incredible at sea footage. Definitely worth seeking out.

Re: Maiden movie

It seems to have been on a limited release schedule. It opens this Friday (8/2) in our area. We're really looking forward to it.

Re: Maiden movie

Lots of women have seen it in the San Francisco Bay area. It has been here for a while now and generated a lot of interest. The documentary was extremely well done. I'm kinda hoping for a Part 2 that digs deeper into the interpersonal relationships. I'd love to hear more about the reporter whose opinion switched 180 degrees. And now, I also hear that Maiden sails again...

Re: Maiden movie

Just heard from a friend that her yacht club in Marina Del Ray is hosting the Maiden vessel on Sept 1. Big buzz being generated along the West Coast!

One of the things that struck me about the film is how good a documentary it actually was. The subject matter is interesting, no doubt, but I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. I had even passed on an early showing before its release. If you like sailing films, particularly a sailing film about racing, I'll bet you'll love this one.

Re: Maiden movie

Here is a link with an article about the movie: https://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2...-so-much-more/

The article also reminds us that Tracy Edwards also went on to make an attempt at the "Trophee Jules Verne" too:

- Cross the starting line between Ushant Island and the Lizard
- Down the Atlantic
- Pass the great capes of Good Hope, Leeuwin and Horn to port.
- Up the Atlantic to re-cross the start line
- No stops
- No outside assistance
- Serious stuff!

Tracy and her Crew made the attempt on Royal et SunAlliance
(formerly the 85ft cat ENZA New Zealand that had already won the Trophy with legends Peter Blake and Robin Knox-Johnston onboard)

Unfortunately Royal and SunAlliance was dismissed in the southern ocean.

Re: Maiden movie

It was pretty decent. Had some obvious mistakes like footage showing Spinnaker changes at was shown in pictures to be an upwind start.

Re: Maiden movie

We quite enjoyed the film. I was skeptical but the people who put it together did an overall excellent job of finding and using a lot of quite old film footage. The juxtaposition of the crew as they are today with their selves while on the boat is very well done. And of course the accomplishment of the skipper pulling the whole thing together and their overall success in the race are very impressive. I strongly recommend seeing the film if you are interested in sailing or in human achievement under difficult conditions.
